1986 was a watershed year in many ways for my chart activities. I was 23 by this point, still intent on eventually entering the radio world at some point, and I was no longer following the major radio trends on some things. I was developing a hybrid chart, designed to encompass everything I was listening to at the time. About 60% of the chart was still major radio hits, but I also began inserting a lot of my own tastes into the chart, it was becoming more and more a “TC” chart than ever before. And my fictional radio station in my head, which I’d named “KTTV” as a teenager (which was changed to “WTTL” when I got older, and relocated to a different part of the country, heh heh), had eventually developed into it’s own unique blended format, which this year I coined a name for in some of my notes – New American Contemporary – part Top 40, part AC, part AOR, part Alternative, and all my own tastes. I was still leaning towards youthful acts like Menudo, Nolan Thomas, Stacy Lattisaw, and their ilk, but also began to ramp up some of the more AOR acts like Motley Crue, Giuffria, Night Ranger, and Aldo Nova. Pop acts and MTV inspiration continued to dominate a lot of things. Rap made its first major appearance since 1981’s “Rapture” by Blondie, in Run DMC and Aerosmith‘s “Walk This Way“. “Starsearch” alumni were all over the chart – Sam Harris, Sawyer Brown, Limited Warranty, and Jimmy Salvemini among them, while a little boy band from Boston made their first appearance this year as well – New Kids On The Block. From their FIRST album. Two years BEFORE they found international superstardom with the release of second album “Hanging Tough“. And, to my amused chagrin these days, the friggin’ Chipmunks hit the chart again this year (they had been around in 1980 and 1981, after their reemergence with “Chipmunk Punk” and followup “Urban Chipmunk“), not once but several times…and of course, plenty of one, two, or three hit wonders, like Glass Tiger, Gregory Abbott, Timbuk 3, and Five Star….all in all it was an interesting year…
