THE TKR CLASSIC CHARTS – 1985

As 1985 began, I made the first substantial change to my chart since just a few weeks after starting it in 1978, expanding the number of positions from 30 to 35, and revised the look of my chart, now including the label and format used, and also included a code that indicated if the song had any special notations, like if it was former number one, from a movie or TV series, was an instrumental, etc. And early in the year, the song that STILL holds the record for the longest run at #1 was on the chart. The song that today everyone knows as Deadpool’s favorite song, “Careless Whisper” by Wham featuring George Michael (as it was billed in the US; in UK it was George’s solo hit), spent a whopping SEVEN weeks at #1 on my chart. I was obviously in love with that song; it wouldn’t be equaled until FIFTEEN years later, when I revived my chart in 2010, as Hanson‘s summer hit “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You” tied it in 2010. This year also brought a number of new acts who would become short-term staples for one or two albums, including Al Corley, Nolan Thomas, Tommy Shaw, and John Parr. Whitney Houston also debuted, and soared high on both the TKR and National charts, and the R&B charts as well. Soundtracks were again the main thing, with a number of hits from films topping the chart. And also from the stage as well, with UK singer Murray Head capturing his first TKR hit since the full chart began in 1978, and his first radio hit in 15 years with “One Night In Bangkok” from the musical “Chess“.  A lot of my regulars were still around, and new regulars were emerging, as was a new influencer – Nick Rocks, Nickelodeon‘s weekend music video show, which often showed videos that MTV wouldn’t touch. Alison Moyet released her debut solo album “Alf“, and her hit single “Invisible” and immediately landed upon my pantheon of favorite artists, where she remains until this day. There were a couple of novelty hits as well, and some others that did well on TKR that completely stiffed or weren’t properly serviced to Top 40 radio, like Jules Shear‘s classic “Steady“, and hits from Peabo Bryson and two other instant pantheon favorites, electrojazz keyboarist Paul Hardcastle (who recently has been back on the newest incarnation of the chart), and UK electropop duo Go West, who was always criminally underrated in the U.S…
