TKR On YouTube: Come Check Out “Coffee And Vinyl”

Since joining up with the YouTube vinyl community, I have become hooked on, and a regular participant in, a great show that airs every morning at around 8:30 AM Eastern. It’s called “Coffee And Vinyl” and is broadcast every morning from Record Krate, a mom-and-pop record store in Raleigh NC (with stores also in Wake Forest and Selma). Hosted by store owner Adam Kirk, there’s a crazy group of regulars who chat, watch Adam (and frequently, other members of the VC as guests) talk about music. I made this promo for him, and it shows the kind of nutty stuff

IT’S FINALLY OFFICIAL! The American Song Contest will launch holiday season 2021

Well, we’ve been waiting for official confirmation about it…and it’s arrived! Variety is reporting exclusively this afternoon that the American Song Contest, the US version of the storied and long running Eurovision Song Contest, will launch during the 2021 Holiday season! The contest is officially licensed by the European Broadcast Union, the official sponsors of Eurovision, which means that ASC will be a sibling telecast to the long running European version which has become an annual tradition since it’s start in 1956. Unlike ESC, however, rather than pitting country against country, the American Song Contest will pit state vs state;

PASSAGES: Film composer Johnny Mandel, 1925-2020

If you’ve listened to popular big bands, saw movies in the 1960s and 1970s, or have ever been anywhere near a television set, chances are good that you’ve heard at least one song by Johnny Mandel, the Oscar and Grammy winning composer and songwriter, who passed away at the age of 94 on Monday. Mandel worked with jazz and swing artists throughout his career, and was known for his affiliations with Count Basie,  Frank Sinatra, and Peggy Lee among others. He first turned to scoring films in the late 1950s, doing the music for “I Want To Live” in 1958,

PASSAGES: Benny Mardones, 1946-2020, two-time “One Hit wonder”

He will forever be known as a one-hit wonder….twice. With the SAME SONG. Singer/songwriter Benny Mardones passed away today after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease; he was 73 years old. Although he recorded his share of music over the years, and also wrote songs for other artists including Brenda Lee and Chubby Checker, he is perhaps best known as one of the few acts to hit the Billboard Hot 100 twice with the same song. Released in 1980, his hit “Into The Night” remains an early 80’s classic and is fondly remembered by fans, and it hit #11 on

PASSAGES: Pete Carr, 1950-2020

Pete Carr was not a household name for most people, but when it came to session musicians, Carr, who passed away yesterday at the age of 70, was a legend. Carr is probably best known to lovers of late 1970’s music as one half of the duo LeBlanc and Carr; he had teamed up with singer/songwriter Lenny LeBlanc for an album on Big Tree Records, and had a #13 Hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 and #11 on the Adult Contemporary chart with the ballad “Falling” in late 1977. But his career spanned over five decades and much of it was

TKR’s full reboot happens July 1 – here’s a sneak peek of what’s coming

On July 1, The Kirkham Report takes the next step into our future, with a completely rebooted site. I mean, well, NO, it’s probably NOT going to look much different – I like the theme I’m using on it now, but I’ll be adding a TON of new things to the pages as we go along. What WILL be changing the most is the content – In addition to my #1 focus, my music charts and preferences, I’m going to be introducing over a dozen new featured columns, each with a particular focus. These columns will be posted every day

“CHART”-ING A COURSE FOR THE FUTURE II

Man I love bad puns, don’t I? Heh heh… Over the past week, since I made the decision to incorporated our “Planet BiblioMusica” blog here on TKR, I’ve been thinking about some stuff, and some ideas for some future columns and projects I wanted to do, and how I can make TKR a “must-see” site for music fans like myself. Stuff I would want to look at if I were a fan of music. So in addition to the original bad-pun-titled column from about 18 months ago, this is what I am thinking about… Reintroducing the “Song Of The Day”
