#35 – Bulgaria
“Intention”
Intelligent Music Project
Songwriters: Milen Vrabevski
The Kirkham Report welcomes you to my coverage of the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest! From April 3 to the end of the contest on May 14, I’ll be here with all the latest ESC news and info, and of course, that means I’m also bringing you all the info on each song this year ranked in order of my personal preference from bottom to top. I’ll give the reasons for my personal rankings, and some background info on the song, artist, songwriters, and such. Again, these are MY opinions, and I realize that the ESC fan community is a rabid one, and rarely everyone agrees with everyone else, so as they say, your mileage may vary.
There are 40 countries participating this year, up from39 in 2021 – Armenia and Montenegro return to the contest after taking 2021 off, while Russia has been excluded this year due to their incursion on the sovereign state of Ukraine; Belarus was disqualified in 2021 for three years because of rules violations on their song entry, that runs through 2023.
In at #35 this year is the official entry from Bulgaria, “Intention” by Intelligent Music Project. It is performed in English. The song will be performed 7th in the first semi-final on May 10. Bulgaria’s national Eurovision broadcast partner Bulgarian National Television makes their song choices internally, so no national final was held.
Intelligent Music Project was the brainchild of businessman Milen Vrabevski, who pulled together a group of musicians from around the world, and it’s ever changing lineup has featured members from Bulgaria, Chile, the United States, and more over the years. Currently the band features Chilean vocalist Ronnie Romero, and musicians Bisser Ivanov, Slavin Slavcev, Ivo Stefanov, Dimitar Sirakov and Stoyan Yankulov; the latter has appeared for Bulgaria at Eurovision twice before, in 2007 and 2013, both times in a duo with singer Elitsa Todorova.
What I’m thinking about this song….::starts bobbing head HARD:: WHOO HOO! HEAD BANGER MUSIC! DUDE! ::stops headbanging:: Ow, I’m too damn old for that now…heh heh. Seriously, though, this is the only pure heavy metal-pop number in this year’s contest, and it’s pretty good, but the trouble is, this kind of music is often thought of as passe by so many these days. Not me -I love hair metal – but many others. And the song is good, but not great. The video helps it considerably, with it’s weird video game playing kid and the chick and her stalker on screen. But overall, it doesn’t light me on fire. I wouldn’t be disappointed to see it get through, but given the fandom apathy, I’m not looking for that to happen this year…
Bulgaria first participated in Eurovision in 2005, making them one of the newer kids on the block; they have participated thirteen times, missing a few years here and there, due to various reasons. Although in the years they have participated they have made it to the Grand Final only five times (several times despite rabid fan followings for certain numbers), three were top five finishers. 2017 was their best showing, with Kristian Kostov‘s gorgeous ballad “Beautiful Mess” landing in the runner up position, more than 200 points ahead of the third place finisher and just over 100 points behind winner Portugal. And for the cancelled 2020 contest as well as 2021, Victoria had the RABID ESC Fandom on her side, it wasn’t enough to take her into the top ten, but at least she made the Grand Final.
