TKR’s full reboot happens July 1 – here’s a sneak peek of what’s coming

On July 1, The Kirkham Report takes the next step into our future, with a completely rebooted site. I mean, well, NO, it’s probably NOT going to look much different – I like the theme I’m using on it now, but I’ll be adding a TON of new things to the pages as we go along.

What WILL be changing the most is the content – In addition to my #1 focus, my music charts and preferences, I’m going to be introducing over a dozen new featured columns, each with a particular focus. These columns will be posted every day or every other day, some on a weekly basis, others on a bi-weekly or monthly basis, and will incorporate a myriad of different things, all of which will be involving music, records, radio, or related material. It will encompass what we’ve done in the past on Planet BiblioMusica, and what I’ve done here in the past as well, and combine it with a lot more to (hopefully) make this a new and different kind of fan site focusing on music, music charts, radio, record collecting, and the record business in general, plus stuff about books, stores, and more.

Here’s a Sneak Peek at the huge list of various new columns and features that will be rolling out throughout the rest of the summer:

The TKR Collection” – This “Planet BM” feature will be a peek inside my personal record collection for all the world to see, and make them start wondering about my sanity…hee hee hee. I will also use this to talk about record labels and such, and type or classes of records, as I’ve done in the past on “PlanetBM” such as cut-outs and stuff like that.

DISCoveries” –  about musicians I want to spread the word about –  this is where I’ll be doing spotlights on artists I’ve fallen in love with over the years that most people probably don’t know or maybe don’t know for music…hopefully you’ll find some new favorites along the way as well…

Desert Island Classics” – this is TC’s list of “classic albums” – the albums I’d most likely take with me if i were stranded on a desert island. WARNING: These are NOT always what you may think of as “Classics” but I DO, and the albums therein may surprise you, but they ALWAYS make me happy, and I hope some people will give them the chance – don’t expect JUST your “run of the mill” titles here, because that’s NOT what you’re going to get…heh heh..if there’s ever a “Your mileage may vary” column on this site, this will be IT!

SoundSync” – I’ve wanted to do this column for years on eCinemaOne, and now I’ll be doing it here and cross-posting, as I look at the relationship between film and film score, how they may compliment each other (or not), and why these have become favorite film scores.

Chart Bound (Or Not…)” – A column about individual songs that I think should have been hits in the US but weren’t for any variety of reasons – they likely did well on my personal charts over the years, but for some reason, radio didn’t touch them, or they got a little airplay and peaked in the bottom half of the Hot 100…these are the hits that should have been…and some of them have been previously spotlighted on my long-defunct “Song Of The Day” column…

PreFab Construction Zone” – I define “prefab band” as a band made for a television series (and occasionally for a movie), and for this column I will be giving you an in-depth look at said bands, and their musical success or lack thereof…a lot of this (but not all) will be from bands manufactured for Saturday morning cartoons, but will also cover prime-time television, cable, and everything in between

Tuning Back The Dial” – A column about my musical memories of childhood and my teen years, personal stories, usually but not always radio or TV oriented, centered around the time frame of about 1965 to 1981. Some of the stories therein will be repurposed from my old “Song of the Day” column, as I told a lot of personal stories there as well.

Lost And Found” – A “Whatever happened to…?” type of column, for people who had a bunch of hits or TV appearances, one time musical teen idols, one hit wonders, etc who then seemingly disappeared forever…and what they may or may not be up to now.

Star Talent” – A column about musical acts who have appeared on – and launched their career on (or are still best known for) TV talent shows, likely starting with the original “Starsearch” on forward through the current day like the Got Talent, Idol, Rising Star, and The Voice franchises, the Starsearch reboot with Arsenio Hall, and so forth, and from around the world. I have a TKR Spotify playlist for this called “Talent Pool” (see the playtions sidebar…and follow the list!) and there’s many more acts for this where many of those came from…

Transistor Time” – spotlights on radio-oriented themes – local radio, classic disc jockeys, syndicated shows that I used to listen to all the time, also music players on the computer and such – music and memories from the days when radio was actually worth listening to, and the current state of it as well…

Musical Channel Surfing“- Memories and looks into musical television shows and such – this will mostly be made up of in-depth looks at classic television variety series, but also will include many shows and specials that had a primary focus on music as well.

Before Their Time” – this column will spotlight some incredible musical performers who are no longer with us, and most of whom passed long before their time. Some of them you may know, most of them you may not, but we’ll be giving them their due here, and spotlighting the great stuff they left behind…

MusicVideo Mania” – remembering the day when the letters “MTV” stood for “MUSIC Television, unlike today, when it stands for “Mostly Trashy Viewing” (the awesome “Ridiculousness” excepted, of course…heh heh). Looks at how music video affected the future of music, classic music videos, music video networks that came and went, and stories involving them.

Under The Covers” – a column focusing on unique, oddball, or unexpected cover versions of familiar songs, along with columns about particular songs and the seemingly insane number of covers that have been done of them..

Soapbox” – Occasionally I will get riled about things going on, and this will be my rants about said topics, usually about online access and copyright issues but I’m sure other topics will pop up on the odd occasion as well…

I Don’t Just Act…I SING TOO!” – all about actors who also sing…or at least ATTEMPT to….some who actually do well at it…and also those that just, quite frankly, DON’T…heh heh…

“Deep Background” – Artists that seemingly came from nowhere to have a monster hit or two, or maybe dozens, but were actually around a lot longer than many people may realize BEFORE they really took off or had a few months in the spotlight…my version of the late great Paul Harvey’s classic radio show “The Rest Of The Story“, I guess…

(Not So) One Hit Wonders” – You may THINK of most of the artists in this column as one hit wonders, but they actually are NOT – they’ve either had smaller chart hits or have continued to make music even after radio left them behind…and we’ll spotlight them here…

Hair Metal High” – Kim’s first column for TKR/PBM will be this one; she’s always loved hair metal (what can you say, we both came of age during that era) and will be taking you to school (hence the title) about some of her finds over the years, the bands that came and went, who should have been superstars but weren’t and so on. She’s got a huge collection of CD’s and cassettes (what’s THAT, Daddy?) from obscure bands that deserved better, and she’ll be spotlighting them here.

Mom And Pop Stop” – this “Planet BM” column will be focused on the local record and music stores out there, and occasionally a book store or two from Kim and I;  a couple of these have already been migrated over from the PBM site and there are a TON of these shops here in our neck of the woods in metro Boston, and many of them we’ve never been to, so once the pandemic slows down and it’s safer to do some shop hopping we’re going to do just that. And you’ll be able to read about it here.

EuroVision Spotlight” –  focused on the hundreds of participants in the various “Eurovision” contests over the years, and introducing you to some of the legends, and some of the people who made a mark – in more ways than one – in the contest, all part of our now year-round  “Eurovision” coverage.

And all of this…it’s just the tip of the iceberg – we’re gearing up for all kinds of general music coverage as well, more columns to be added, live music spotlights, and YouTube stuff as well, including a new “Planet BiblioMusica” nostalgia-oriented podcast that will make it’s debut on July 4th weekend. Plus all the coverage of TC’s personal charts, the worldwide charts, and more that I’ve always done,  so there’s all kinds of exciting music-oriented stuff on the horizon and we’d love it if you’d come check it out and spread the word to your friends if you like what you find!  Some of the new columns will begin to appear BEFORE July 1, so keep your eyes and ears out there – you never know WHAT you might find here…but I can guarantee you, it’s going to be lots of fun!
